Auroral crown and lava flow on new postage stamps from Iceland

In celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Icelandic stamp, Pósturinn is issuing four new stamps this year. The first Icelandic stamps, known as shilling stamps, were released in 1873. The release date is today, August 23, 2023. For the occasion, Pósturinn has created a mini sheet with four self-adhesive stamps that are each worth 50g and 100g and may be used for correspondence both inside and outside of Europe. The sheet is now available for purchase for 1950 ISK.

The decision was made to feature Icelandic nature on the stamps. "Vilhjálmur Sigurðsson, a former employee at the Pósturinn Stamp Sale, and a current employee at the Stamp Sale, Sigríður Ástmundsdóttir. They commissioned Örn Smári Gíslason to design the minisheet," says Þórhildur Ólöf Helgadóttir, CEO of Pósturinn.

The pictures on the stamps are taken by drone. " Ragnar Th. Sigurðsson, a photographer, captured the variety of Icelandic nature that may be seen on the new stamps. Diversity in Icelandic nature plays a central role, the interplay of fire and ice on the one hand, unparalleled contrasts in the landscape and the aerospace on the other, the flashing northern lights," she says.

The images are brand-new to the collection of Icelandic stamps, according to Þórhildur. "We believe they will be popular in tourist destinations as a reminder of a trip to Iceland, and stamp collectors are ecstatic that Pósturinn is celebrating this anniversary with the issue of these stamps."
