The Yule Cat / Playing Cards

The Yule Cat is played as the game, Old maid. The aim of the game is not to end up as fodder for the Yule Cat for he is a naughty cat who eats children if they behave badly. In the game there are two of each Yule Lad, one Yule Cat a card with rules in English and Icelandic.

The Yule Cat is played as Old maid:
The aim of the game is not to end up as fodder for the Yule Cat, that is, not to be stuck with the Yule Cat at the end of the game because the one who does loses and everyone else wins. In the beginning, the dealer deals all of the cards to the players, one at a time. Some players might get more cards than others, that doesn't matter, since we're all terrible Yule Lads anyway. Each player sorts his cards into pairs (two alike), discards the pairs in a pile on the table but keeps the single Yule Lads on his hand and the Yule Cat, if the player was unlucky enough to have been dealt that card.

The player to the left of the dealer begins. He takes one card from the dealer. If the card matches one he already has in his hand, he can place the pair into the pile. Then its the next player's turn who is to the left of the last player and so the game goes on. When a player has gotten rid of all his cards his part in the game comes to an end while the others continue until only one player remains, and he is then, of course, fodder for the Yule Cat.

The Yule Lads costumes are based on Kristin Sigurdardottir's ideas
